Distress in the DRC

It is very scary to hear about the terrible things happining in the DRC. The conflict that is occuring is awful. The rape, mutilation, and use of child soilders is horrifying. I can't comprehend why this conflict has been allowed to go on for years; it is amazing that the international community has not steped in to help. We learned about how the war in Congo is a continuation of the genocide in Rwanad and a fight for power and control of resources. We had a discussion about how the international community may be reluctant to get involved because they feel bad about not getting involved in the Rwandan genocide earlier. This is not a good excuse to not get involved; two rights do not make a wrong. The horror of the conflict in Congo is overwhelming. The only way that we can hope to put an end to the fighting is to help rebuild an infrastructure withing Congo. I hope that the conflict will end soon so the citizens of Congo will no longer have to live in fear.
